Plugged-in Art

At ALIVESHOES we are constantly looking to extend boundaries between art and perception. This includes an examination of age-old questions about our culture. Our plugged in, technology-driven world has transformed how we encounter and interact with art, with what the arts community calls Virtual Museums. We no longer need to go to the actual physical space—the museum, the gallery, the park—we can simply hop online, click a mouse, and viola!

Some great examples of this phenomenon include the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago or the Virtual Museum of Canada, which brings together works of art from Canada’s museums regardless of size or geographical location.

But is this enough? Can the real experience of looking at a piece of art be replicated on a computer monitor or a mobile phone? We think the web is a great tool, but it’s not the real experience.

With ALIVESHOES, we give you the opportunity to experience a work of art on the internet, but then continue the experience it in the real world, in your daily life, wearing a piece of the art – the shoes.

We would love to hear how you think technology has altered your interaction with art. Do you think Virtual Museums help enrich engagement and appreciation? What do you lose by not viewing something in-person? We hope you’ll comment below!

WELCOME TO THE ALIVESHOES BLOG!

One part wearable, eco-friendly fashion, one part cutting edge art installation, ALIVESHOES is a forward marching movement. Shoes have long been a symbol of many things—prosperity, creative expression, innovation, style, and individuality—but these colorful kickers are destined to completely change the way you perceive fashion and art. (And maybe even yourself!)

At ALIVESHOES, the shoes inspire the art and the art inspires the shoes. Each pair of shoes sold on this site started out as part of one-of-a-kind art installation. So far 5 talented artists from around the world have their work available on the ALIVESHOES site.

Each art installation uses ALIVESHOES as its medium of expression. After the installation goes down, the limited number of shoes go up for sale on this website. On the underside of your ALIVESHOES tongues, there’s a little image of the artist’s original rendering of your shoes’ original home. And once on your feet, these shoes will speak for themselves.

In addition, when you purchase a pair of ALIVESHOES, you have the option to donate a little extra money (what we call the “ALIVE Value.”) The proceeds are split: 50% to a selected charity (such as the Museum of Modern Art or the Natural Resources Defense Council and 50% goes to the furthering the ALIVESHOES art installation project.

Our hope is that this blog will not only keep you informed of our upcoming projects, but serve as a forum for discussing the ever-shifting worlds of art, fashion, and the eco-friendly movement. This blog will offer a behind-the-scenes look at the artists’ projects and the values that sustain it.

We hope you will use this space to start conversations on what you observe, think, and hear in the art world. And beyond. As the old saying goes, to know someone, you must walk in his shoes. We hope to get to know you!

A Q&A with Luca Botticelli, founder of ALIVESHOES

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I was born in Montegranaro, a little remote town in the pristine Italian hills, home to great people with great ideas. I took an early interest in art and fashion; my father is a collector of contemporary art and the family has been part of the fashion world for more than 60 years. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Economics and a Master’s in Business Management.  I worked for three years in the fashion industry and traveled a great deal.

In the past two years I began to see a link between art and consciousness. ALIVESHOES is a culmination of my professional career and the result a life-long passion for fashion and art.

Where did the idea for ALIVESHOES come from?

It was a sudden flash of an idea and it took me a little more than a year to launch the project. I had observed for years how art and fashion tend to be restrictive. For example, fashion trends and products are usually dictated by a designer or a brand’s image and based on serial reproduction, while art is often perceived as something you only look at for a short period of time. ALIVESHOES is first and foremost part of the ongoing conversation about art by letting people wear a unique piece of it. It’s a fusion of the two worlds and this fusion creates a totally new concept.

What were some of the challenges you faced while creating the project?

From the launch day on all is a challenge but it’s fun and rewarding. The main challenge was to take something that only existed in my mind and execute it in the real world. It was also a challenge to form a team that would be truly on board with the project. Third and most was the challenge to not fall into the usual mundane work patterns that tend to diminish the excitement of a new project.

How are the participating artists chosen for the project?

We aim to choose a wide variety of artists from around the world who will express a sense of passion for the ALIVESHOES project. We think everyone is an artist and aim to create a mix of international artists, emerging artists, yet still leave it open to whomever wants to contribute.

How did you choose the locations for the art installations?

We picked lesser-known spots so that people could discover them along with the art.

Who are some of your favorite artists? Who inspires you?

Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Alighiero Boetti, Lucio Fontana
