About Tellise Maurice
From the very first breathe I took on the 26th of July in 1985 in Chicago, IL, my parents say that they knew I was going to be different. Bold and unique. A person who instead of going with the crowd, would set their own path and follow it with all their mind, body and soul. Even when it came to my name, my parents went all out. They named me Tellise Maurice Clark. Not a common name and I believe it has a lot to do with who I have turned up to be. Tellise came from my mother’s favorite Greek American actor named Telly Savalas, on Co'Jack a 1980s TV show she enjoyed watching. Maurice, on the other hand, was a name from Maurice Cheeks an NBA champion who played for the Philadelphia 76ers and was my father’s childhood friend. I am a Leo, and like the lion symbol, I have learned to believe in myself, be strong, courageous and with every step take calculated moves. All this is at the very core of what I do and is the foundation my fashion brand is based on.
Growing up my life was pretty normal, and I had big dreams. They say if your dreams do not scare you, then they are not big enough and true to that, my dreams of being more and achieving every goal I set out on did scare me. At some point, the fear got to me, and with a name that was not so popular, I felt invisible. For a while, I felt like I wouldn’t amount to anything but a conversation with a woman I hold dear to my life transformed my life. She opened my eyes to the reality that my uniqueness was not a weakness but a strength, which if I tapped into would take me to great heights. From this point on, everything I considered a weakness became my runway and I begun to soar. From a young person who hid behind ‘solo’; my nickname by then, I became a powerhouse, and I was proud of my unique name.
I ventured into music as a recording artist, and through that, I discovered my love for fashion and Tellise Maurice was born.
