Kkira

The Kkira brand is inspired by the freedom of expression! As a shoe lover myself, I thought it would be fun to design colorful and expressive shoes that can be worn regularly. I think what we wear affects how we feel about ourselves and it occurred to me that shoes could be an easy way for people to experience a degree of freedom and joy in what might otherwise be a day filled with the mundane for most people.

About Mauryn Kkira

My name is Mauryn Kkira (pronounced Maureen Chirrha) and I am originally from Uganda - a small country in East Africa. I moved to the United States when I was 19 and full of dreams and in my second year of college, as an extremely excited pre-med student, my family lost all our money through a series of unfortunate events. Needless to say, the direction of my life changed dramatically.  In an effort to manage a difficult situation, I chose to stop college and opted for a certificate course (which was literally all I could afford), got a job as a clinical assistant and became the bread-winner for me and my family. While I can honestly say I have accomplished some awesome things in my life, my greatest accomplishment to date is that I managed to take care of all of us (2 adults, 4 siblings, 1 niece, 1 nephew and myself) until they were all able to stand on their own two feet. While there were many victories along the way, I have to say my proudest of them all was putting my youngest brother through school all the way to University! It is through this life-changing event that I had the opportunity to not only discover myself but to also recreate who I was going to be. It became the adventure through which I learned so much about myself and discovered my love for creativity, freedom, self-expression and the desire to inspire people to be themselves. While the journey was often challenging, I have to say, it was truly worth every second and I am so grateful for how it shaped me. As is usually the case, my life experience has contributed to my esthetic and to the designer I am today! My design style is deeply influenced by my upbringing and my African heritage which is rooted in visceral textures, the vibrancy of color, bold whimsy and organic multi-dimension. Think of it as bohemian sophistication with an unexpected twist! My life story has taught me a few things and they are the reason I do this work! I know the value of happiness and love helping people to experience it fully. I know the value of being free, known and acknowledged for oneself - there is nothing more empowering for a human being than that. And lastly, I know the value of being free to live one’s truth and to express it in whichever way they feel most honored. There is no greater bliss.
